Stay in Singapore Hotels? I Always Do...

People ask me, why do you like to stay in hotels, and worse, why Singapore hotels?

Easy answer... getaway and breakaway from stress without leaving Singapore. Fair enough? Lame answer... to boost Singapore hotel industry and Singapore economy by consuming locally?
Smart answer... too much money, don't know where to spend?

Haha, whichever it is... All I know I won't spend too much money on hotels and always look out for hotel promotion whenever it is available. So that I won't feel much of a pinch. If you would have spent $300 over for a noisy weekend in Costa Sands or Downtown East with kids running around, barbeque smell over your body for 24 hours, and worst... Noise pollution!! Over my dead body please!!! I would rather go for a quiet luxury hotel with down pillows and sumptious buffet breakfast, thereafter catch a movie, swim at the pool, gym in the hotel, call for room service... that's truely relaxed, ok? In some occasions e.g. National Day, New Year eve, I treated my families to stay as well too!

My Bali Short Getaway Part 1 (Mercure Kuta Resort)

Romantic Sunset you will never forget...

Ok, finally I can make a comparison of those on professional photos that I posted previously and those I took from Mercure Kuta Resort and All Seasons Legian Resort in Bali. After all, it is only US$38 per night! Dirt Cheap la!

Spent $55k Indo Rupiah to reach Kuta from Airport, checking the resort and they upgraded me from Standard to Superior Room. Standard room is at ground floor or basement without any view, so I was given 2nd floor with a balcony, and that's the difference. Without seaview is fine, looking at the greenery you will feel fresh every day too from the hot weather in Bali! The best part of the hotel is definitely the infinity pool at the roof top, you see my pictures you will know why I want to book here. :)

Something interesting happened when I was at the pool taking these sunset photos, a professional photography group was there taking the hotel and sunset pictures for their official hotel website. I was requested to post my "sexy" back picture facing towards the sunset... and I may be featured in one of their pictures. So watch out and see if you can recognise me!

After much struggling to accomodate my dad's timing after his relief teaching, I finally decided to book a trip to pamper my parents who have never been to a Caucasian country. Meaning, either I would have to chose a trip to Europe or Australia, whereafter it is cheaper for bring the two. Always wanted to bring them to have a different
perspective of western lifestyle and environment.

Gotten a very good deal for Emirates Airlines flying to Melbourne this June holiday by accident. In fact it is only known to me when I used the search engine to find any cheap deal. This economy airticket costs me S$407 including tax per pax! This is 50% off from those usual promotional airticket offered by other airlines such as Qantas, BA or SQ. A fraction of what I would pay for usually, now I can buy my parents a trip easily without feeling much pinch to that faraway Aussie Land, i.e. 1 single price for the price of two to Aussie! This is as good as travel to Bangkok by SQ flights but this is 3.5 times more the distance paying this almost same amount! Can't be help in this current economic situation :op

I am lucky to be the last few to get this price ticket in June for such school holiday seasons in Singapore, afterwhich couple days later no more of this price available and it goes up to double or triple the price! This price also fly Emirates to Brisbane, but I guess Brisbane are more for people who enjoy great barrier reef for scuba or underwater world for kids. However, it is winter in Australia in June, thus Melbourne would be a better choice for some serious sight seeing, Penguin Island or Great Ocean Road.

Now I am certainly looking for good deals to book the accomodation there, should I get a service
apartment or hotel? Wait till there is another promotion coming soon... I hope I can get it, no matter how! So would I see Lady Sarah Ashley in Melbourne? Guess not unless I go to Alice Spring, haha...

Bali... Here I come on May Day!

Recently Air Asia has offered $0 for their new route to some Indonesia destinations from Singapore, starting from 24 March onwards. Bali is one of them. While I was looking for places to go for a short getaway during Good Friday, I saw this promotion, thus trying my luck cos usually peak season like this they will not offer $0. And yes, indeed. But the return trip offer is still good at $214 including tax. So without hesitation I book it!

Then I continue with my resort booking following next. As a member of Accors Advantage Plus, I took advantage of their recent promotion of offering US$38 per night for their exclusive 3-day hotel offer around the world. I might be crazy but I booked 2 resorts for 1 night each for my 2 nights stay in Bali! Say I cheapskate but I like to try new and different things especially with such good offer, moreover this 2 hotels are not far apart as Legian and Kuta beaches are linked together, according to the map.

Best Time to book Your Hotel Stay on Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is approaching around the Corner, some couples may think of dropping ideas to go overseas now for a romantic getaway at Maldives, Phuket or Bali 5-star resorts, while looking at the current economic downturn. Save Money of course! But does that compromise young couples to spend their quality time with each other? Probably not for some.

So save money to travel, then where to go then? Escapade from work or family and yet not overspend unnecessarily, cos you will never know if your job is at stake anytime. But, there is an option to stay away from the chaos without spending more than $200-300 for a couple and without travelling hassle!

Recently I browsed some hotel sites in Singapore just for fun (in fact, just a routine check at times). Perhaps the hotel chain starts to feel the pinch of the economic downturn effect and volume of tourists decreases over the past few months, many of such hotels have dropped their room rates slowly between 10-30%, while some offering some good deals even during peak season such as Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day, slashing the price as low as 50%.

In the past, even a no- star hotel can go as high as $180 per night in Singapore, such as during last year F1 Race in September last year. But now, you can find some great hotels here with a real good and hot deal!

Ok, which are the few that I found has started to giving some hot deals for the loving birds to spend their time right at homeland for Valentine's Day?

Hilton Hotel in Orchard - S$203. This price includes 1 night stay with a choice of king or double beds in deluxe room and free breadfast for 2. Come with broadband in room. With additional $50 or more, you can enjoy Executive floor room and butler services easily with some cocktail break to add on. This rate has never been that cheap for such international hotel chain before during the good old days.
Conrad Centennial Hotel in Suntec City - $194 for twin bed, $235 for Kind bed in a Classic Room. It also comes with free breakfast for 2. Broadband with a fee. Same here with additional $50 you can enjoy club facilities.
Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel in Havelock - $204 for double or twin rooms and includes breakfast for 2.
Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Marina Square - $228 for double or twin rooms and includes breakfast for 2.

There are many more other 5-Star hotels less than $250 per night such as Inter-Continental, Marina Mandarin and Pan Pacific that offer similar package and attract locals to generate their business revenues through such domestic spending, if tourist industry is not going to revive for the next few months, or even a year. Even you want to look for lower budget, there are many good bargain for 4 star rating hotels as well such as Changi Village hotel, Gallery Hotel, M hotel, Novotel Clark Quay or Le Meridien, etc. All less than $200 per night. Most of these offers extends till mid of 2009, so grab this bargain if you have some spare cash to spare to relax in your own homeland and yet, feel like going for a holiday! So many choices to choose from, I hope I have one romantic hotel stay this coming Valentine...

2 Important Warehouse Sales whenever I visit Hong Kong

Ok... 2009!

This is my 1st blog of this brand new year, I admit I am a little lazy at times and don't know what to write to make it fits my lifestyle, but of course I would love to give tips to shoppers whenever I can, from where to shop or what good deals I have bought from various sales. Be it a belt, tee shirt or bag, ok I will reveal it if possible where I got it from. Anyway, blog is just a matter of sharing, right?

Ok for shopaholics, for the 1st one I am revealing, is 2 important warehouse trips I will make whenever I visit Hong Kong! So get ready when it is winter or summer sales, it can go as low as 70% discount for some luxury brands.

1. Space Warehouse

Location : 2/F, South Horizons Plaza (East Wing), South Horizons, Hong Kong

Transportation : Take the bus ( 90B ) at the Admiralty MTR station or the bus ( 590 ) at Central MTR station. Sorry did not take any photo here as it is quite easy to find. Just watch out a down slope when the bus turns left and quite a few people would drop off, you can see the Black signboard "Space" on the right side of the bus. If you missed the bus stop, it will continue a little before it turns right to a straight road, it is just along the Horizons Plaza, just need a little more walking backward will do.

Famous brand : Miu Miu, Prada* off-season goods* Prices are up to 30% - 70% off.

Opening hours : Mon Closed, Tue - Sat 10:00 - 18:00, Public holiday 12:00 - 18:00

Remarks: Off seasons but you can still find good deals there if you are a Prada die-hard fan, I bought a Prada polo tee at S$220 after conversion (70% off from original price). I almost want to buy a sunshade cap but after thinking of the number of times I would wear, I gave up even it looks cool on me. Other than that, not much choices for guys but gals one should have quite a handful of items, especially bags. If you are bag freak, this is your heaven!!

2. Horizon Plaza

Transportation : No bus to reach there, so the best is to visit Space 1st, take a cab from there about S$5 and you will reach there.

Famous brand : Moschino, Paul Smith, Max Mara, Joyce Boutique, Lane Crawford* off-season goods* Prices are up to 30% - 70% off.

Opening hours : 10:00 to 19:00 daily.

Remarks: It was a tall building by itself, and there is a roof top cafe for a sip of coffee after you finished your shopping crave. Appeared like a factory, when you entered the lobby, there is a lady wearing costume passed you a piece of paper which guide you to various floor, even you unable to copy down all the brands from the directory. My best hunt is definitely Joyce Warehouse, you can simply find any brands in there such as Yohji Yamamoto, Hugo Boss, Jil Sander, Dolce Gabbana, etc. I bought Y's tee and Hugo boss undergear while my friend got a Hugo Boss high-cut canvas shoes. Believe it, my undergear is only S$10 per pc and Y's tee at $$40, and best my friend's shoes is also S$40 too!

Realised that they have different discount at different season. I was there in Summer so the discount might only 30-50% but when it comes to autumn then winter, it will drop further to 70-80%!! But I guess, you just grab whatever there is suitable for you on the shelf, who will bother to come back again for the same piece when it is gone by then! Haha...

Watching Kylie X 2008, Live in Bangkok's Impact Arena

Finally, I made my way to watch the concert of the year – Kylie X 2008, Live in Bangkok’s Impact Arena @ Muang Thong Thani on 23 November 2008 (Sunday).

The concert is about 20-30 mins drive from the city area. Find carpark was a breeze, don’t know why it was not as what I expected as there were ample of car park space around even at 1st floor. The multi-stories car park was merely opposite to the stadium itself. Upon arrival to the stadium, you could easily find Singaporeans there, not surprised at all. My friends are among the few.

My Thai friends are from California WOW thus he got me a staff price @ 2,720 bahts, 15% off the published price for my seating. He also got me free Singha Beer from the sponsor, and it was really big cup, think would have 750 ml - 1l per cup. OK ok, let's get high a little to dance in there!

I got my ticket in a credit card design with the beautiful Kylie on it and can keep it as a momento (better than the paper concert ticket issued by Sistic) , Section K Row C, Level 2 facing to the stage in front. I thought I would be sitting nearest to the stage at Level 2, but my Thai friend got it for the centre to have the best full view. it is still the tiny Kylie about the size of my finger nail but it is for this price 3,200 bahts compare to the most expensive golden package 9,800 bahts with 2 free drinks, express lane and 1 Kylie DVD. At least I can view the stage without turning my head left till right. No grumble. : )

The Arena is not that big as I thought, just 2/3 of the size of Singapore Indoor Stadium, but yet the concert is only 80% filled. Economic Crisis or Thais’ Buying Power? I guess it is more of the latter. Nevertheless, I was still pretty as much excited as having that at Madonna Confession Tour in Tokyo few years back. The concert started late at 8.30pm. Only got to know at the end of the concert that the Thai Princess came for the concert and the show should only be started when she arrived. Royal family, hmmm… that’s the special treatment. The national anthem broadcast twice, one before I went in and one after. All stood still, but why twice? Search me but just respect that.

The show started with screams, but no WOW factor there for a decent opening. Most of the songs are her recent album songs, and some of her top hits in Dance floor. Her mix of songs are quite decent, but bear in mind this is not a disco, folks! :) The concert lasted for 1 hr 30 minutes, and she sang for another 5 more songs from the encore, ending with the 80s' hit, I should be so lucky. Then all rushed out to catch a few photo snaps with Kylie the last round, errr... with her concert poster I mean! :) While the rest were running to grab the pathetic few cabs in that outskirt of the city. Thai friends said it is very difficult to take cabs there, count yourself lucky to get one or no choice but to call 1688, their cab hotline.

To rate this concert out of 5, choreography is no doubt 4.5, stage design 2.5 (nothing except a huge TV screen? Too simple and no WOW factor), Kylie interaction with audience 4.5 (Thai friend told me Christina Anguilera's concert in Bangkok is worst with only she sings no talk --- freezing cold ambience concert!), crowd response 3.5 then slowly move to 4.5 (else how she managed to sing 5 encore songs!!). Overall performance I would rate 4. If stage design improved, she would easily get 4.5-5.

So, those who have watched this, share your view... or if you are the next to watch Kylie in Singapore Indoor Stadium this Tuesday 25 Nov, let me know how you rate this concert then, if there is any difference in standard between 2 countries! Afterall, we still love Kylie, right?

Found a Ramen shop near my office through a colleague. Saw its advertisement some years back on papers, but I couldn't locate the exact location till lately. It is at North Canal Road along Boat Quay area, just opposite of OCBC Building.

So what so special about this shop?

It is owned by a Japanese Young Chap.
He brought in Hokkaido-style Ramen with most of the ingredients came from Hokkaido itself, I heard.
Price range is quite reasonable about S$8-15 depends on choices. For ladies, they can choose half bowl version if they found the original size is too filling for them. Very thoughtful.
Hokkaido-style Ramen call Shoyu Ramen includes with sweet corns and Hokkaido butter to make it a buttery and some creamy feel.
Like any Ramen shop in Japan, you can add their half boiled egg yolk-full boiled egg white to your dish. Others you may add such as bean sprout, corns, charsiew, etc.
3 Chef/Staff who are truly Japanese, so you feel that you are somewhere in Japan. Of course they greet you with Japanese accent :op
Open kitchen concept, best to sit right in front of the counter so you can watch them face-to-face cooking while you are waiting or eating.
Have Sapporo Beer at S$9 for 660ml, haven't try yet.
Old style Japanese posters on the wall, cabinet, everywhere.
You can choose to sit outside the shop for afresco feel or 2nd floor for air-conditioning area.
Free Flow of Japanese Wheat Tea with a jug provided to each table, I like that!

So try this Baikohken Ramen Shop, if you want a truely Hokkaido experience!! Oiishi Ne!

Kylie X2008 Concert, where is the cheapest in Asia?

Frankly speakly, I didnt expect the tickets in Singapore vary with other Asian cities so much, when they announced the sales across Asia. That makes Singapore the most expensive place to host any form of concert for international stars, outside Japan. Ridiculous?

I really count myself lucky 'cos I realised that the tickets are ridiculous priced in Singapore, there are too many categories to choose, despite the pricing range is only 5. Just a single side view also have 5 different pricing. Can't believe it? Let's check out the price range for Kylie X2008 World Tour. Does that make Singapore competitive? I doubt so.

So I choose to fly to Bangkok to watch at $140 per ticket, with 15% discount from my Thai friend, which worked out to $120 per ticket, with a Tiger Airway return ticket $0.01 promotion ($159 including all taxes), that totalled about $279 for a return airticket + kylie concert ticket which is equivalent to the price I pay $375-$550 Side View seating in Singapore (compare apple to apple where I am actually sitting in Bangkok vs Singapore).

By the way, my hotel is free for 3 nights in Bangkok because of a friend's hotel membership offer. : )

Bought a mini-notebook recently in an IT show, after trying to find a replacement for my current bulky and slow laptop. This idea comes about when I went for a recent HK working trip, and my laptop that I brought along was far too heavy and big to carry, especially when trying to lessen my luggage weight load.

Why I choose this MSI? I have read numerous reviews from websites that this is a good buy, apart from another few similar ones such as Acer Aspire One, ASUS Eeebook at a budget of less than S$1k. My 1st priority is it must be not weighed more than 1.3kg including battery, then I will look into the keyboard size, functions and memory. Basically if you need something that is light to carry, can web surf, built-in mic and webcam, good size of harddisk, and look like a macbook with cheap price, MSI might be the one for you.

So far I am proud to be the owner of this 6-cell and 1.2kg limited design notebook at S$899 with S$35 upgrade from 1GB RAM to 2GB, and now I carried this easily anywhere in town and overseas. I don't know where does it sell now as I didn't see this in any retail shop, that's why I bought it from the IT show when I know they are selling there! Again, I have the luck of getting real good travel deal for my recent birthday retreat at KL. I booked Tiger Airways at $86 return ticket with tax free offer! Isn't it a good deal? Why choose KL? Well, because of a female colleague from Alexandra office told me it is a MUST try for their Fish Spa for RM28 (3 times lesser than you pay in SG) to nibble your feets till as smooth as silk, and another female colleague from Tampines office told me that I must visit the newly opened Gigantic Pavilion Mall to burn my pocket! How can I not tempted to go with their recommendation?

I really want to pamper myself for this short getaway for my birthday. I got a 5-Star hotel by Starwood Luxury Collection at US$197 per night, with super large room plus Club Floor Facilities and you know what, my 2nd night is free! Moreover, I have a breath taking view of Petronas Twin Tower and KL Viewing Tower from my windows at the same time! Do you know how beautiful it could be at night? Just romantic... : )

As usual with huge sumptious breakfast (so wide range of choices that I have to split 2 mornings to try out 2 sections of the restaurant), evening cocktail, 42 inch tv, dvd player and bla bla club thingy. Also, the monorail is just right at the door step so going to Bukit Bintang is just 2-3 stops away. But wait, they allow me to have free laundry up to 6 pieces of clothings per day! So which means, I manage to wash 12 pcs of clothings absolutely free for my entire 3D2N stay! Kewl!

Which means, I brought back my clothings all freshly cleaned and need not bother my mum for that washing of dirty clothings, apart from those I wore it during my flight home.... : )

S$26 per night for a 5-Star Hotel Deal in Hong Kong?

Recently I went for a shopping vacation to Hong Kong for its Summer Sales. Gosh, could not remember when was my last crazy shopping deal prior to this trip. Anyway, that's not the point. The point is, I managed to get an unbelievable deal for this trip... Till now, I still could not believe it is true or are they stupid to offer this price at a BIG loss?

I was reading a travel forum somewhere and trying to find a good travel deal to Hong Kong as well as getting to know the latest IN thing there. Then there was this lady wrote that she found a website that costs her only a fraction of 50 pounds for a 5-star hotel in Causeway Bay. So I follow through and went to that travel website that allows you to book hotel room at selected cities. I anyhow keyed in a date that i prefer to and it went on searching for the price. Then, my eyes wide opened when the price appeared. S$26 per night for a Hotel in Causeway Bay??!?!?!

Rubbing my eyes, I went through step by step and checked if I have keyed in mistakenly somewhere or the website creates an error page. Oh my, it is indeed a 5-star hotel and better still, it is a Club Floor Room!! Are they crazy?? With free breakfast, evening cocktail, free shuttle bus to and fro airport and seaview... only S$26?? I tried 2nd time, 3rd time, 4th time again and even on other selected dates, it was indeed S$26! Without hesitation, I booked immediatelyfor 5 nights to secure the room! I only pay for $130 for 5 luxury nights stay! Who would want to miss this super great deal? At most, I only lost $130 opportunity cost even it is a fraud, and moreover the website is a reliable airline website. How could it be fake?

Continue from there, I proceed to book SAFRA discounted airfares at 50% off for that promotional month and the airfare only cost me $345 per person including tax! So in total, I only pay $345+$130=$475 for a 6D5N Hong Kong trip with airfares and hotel! That's my 1st luck and needless to say, the hotel is damn good and luxury. I even extended this deal to my parents with 1 week stay after I returned home. Anyway, the offer price went up as per normal from October onwards, but who knows the next offer will be soon?
